MoorMaster™ automated mooring closes the technological gap between container ships and today's highly automated facilities, and is increasingly seen as part of fully automated port design.

MoorMaster™ secures even Super Post-Panamax vessels with capacity larger than 20,000 TEUs in a matter of seconds, enabling loading operations to begin more quickly. The smart control algorithm eliminates vessel surge motion to increase box rate as well as berth availability.

And now MoorMaster has been redesigned to help transform even more ports worldwide, with the launch of new MoorMaster NxG. The product’s sleek and compact design allows for easy installation, even in ports with limited space between the quay edge and STS crane exclusion zone.

Discover new MoorMaster NxG now.

Benefits

  • Moor vessels in 30 seconds (detach in 10 seconds) freeing up tugs and manpower early
  • Increased container throughput due to faster turnarounds and reduced vessel motion (berth creep, long waves, passing vessels, etc.)
  • Time savings enable slow steaming for shipping line or increased vessel productivity
  • Reduced operational expenses including tug fuel burn and manpower operational time
  • Improved STS crane productivity and enabler for fully autonomous STS cranes
  • Improved shore and ship crew safety
  • More than 90% reduction in emissions during mooring due to reduced tug and vessel engine usage

Port of Salalah, Oman

Transshipment
Since 2006
Moorings: Two to three a day
Vessels up to LOA 400m
Owner: Port of Salalah
Operator: Port of Salalah

Challenge

  • Container port servicing vessels up to 400m LOA
  • Severe water issues three months per year during monsoon season
  • Productivity (box rate) drops significantly during monsoon causing severe disruption to operations
  • No improvement from breakwater

Solution

  • MoorMaster™️ systems installed at four berths
  • Systems covered by Cavotec service agreement with on-site team

Key benefits

  • Productivity fully restored and even improved
  • Loading/offloading begins sooner due to faster mooring
  • Tugs needed for shorter time and employees kept safe during mooring
  • Reduced fuel consumption and emissions from tugs and vessel engines

I was a captain of a container ship, and frequently moored my vessel at the Port of Salalah using Cavotec MoorMaster™. Despite challenging berthing conditions due to long waves, Cavotec MoorMaster™ makes mooring safe, easy and fast.

Capt. Vasileios Velmachos (Costamare)

Port of beirut, Lebanon

Since 2014
Moorings: Four to five a week
Vessels Up to LOA 350m
Owner: Port of Beirut
Operator: Port of Beirut

Challenge

  • Extending the berth required the breakwater to be extended and an oil pipeline relocated, both highly expensive operations

Solution

  • MoorMaster™️ systems installed at two berths

Key benefits

  • Avoided breakwater extension
  • Oil pipeline could be left undisturbed
  • Loading/offloading begins sooner due to faster mooring
  • Tugs needed for shorter time and employees kept safe during mooring
  • Reduced fuel consumption and emissions from vessel engines

Port of Ngqura, South Africa

Since 2015
Moorings: Four to five a week
Vessels up to LOA 366m
Owner: Transnet
Operator: Transnet

Challenge

  • Container port servicing vessels up to 366m LOA
  • Excessive movement of ships due to long wave and high winds, especially during winter
  • Significant downtime in cargo operations affecting the terminal's efficiency targets

Solution

  • MoorMaster™️ systems installed at berth D100

Key benefits

  • Significantly increased threshold for operations increasing productivity and keeping vessels safe
  • Loading/offloading begins sooner due to faster mooring
  • Reduced fuel consumption and emissions from tugs and vessel engines

Napier Port, New Zealand

Expected operation 2022
Owner: Napier
Operator: Napier

Challenge

  • New container wharf under construction in exposed location, requiring extension of breakwater
  • Normal and long period waves expected to reduce berth availability and cap the size of visiting vessels

Solution

  • Rigorous modelling showed MoorMaster was best solution to address challenges
  • MoorMaster system integrated in berth design to automatically moor vessels in port, and reduce vessel motion

Key benefits

  • Maximized berth availability and no need for breakwater extensionas MoorMaster reduces vessel motion
  • Increased capacity through faster mooring as well as increased box rate
  • Ability to safely accept larger ships even under adverse environmental conditions

MoorMaster will let us make more of every minute the ships are at berth. The system’s ability to reduce vessel motion will not only increase box rate, but also allow us to safely handle larger ships.

Michel de Vos – General Manager Infrastructure Services, Napier Port

Typical container port

Challenge

  • Container port servicing vessels up to 400m LOA
  • Conventional mooring taking between 20 and 40 minutes
  • Large mooring crews exposed to safety hazards from handling mooring lines
  • Considerable emissions due to tug and vessel engines

Solution

  • MoorMaster™️ systems for automated mooring at the push of a button from a safe position on the berth or even the port control room

Key benefits

  • Increased productivity as loading/offloading begins sooner due to faster mooring
  • Resources freed up as there is less need for tugboats and mooring crews
  • Reduced fuel consumption and emissions from tug boats and vessel engine, the latter partly thanks to faster shore power connection
  • Safe mooring with no humans in the hazardous area on the key
